Interesting web site. Suggest you look up the name MOYLAN in the Oxfod Companion of Irish Heraldry. I did in August, 1978, while visiting St. Williams College, York, England. The first Moylan listed had my own name, "William Moylan" (more like "Whileheam Mouylanhunahaneus") was hung in 1295 as the most notorious horse thief in all of the British Isles. Interestingly, the Moylans would "borrow" horses from the English and then sell them back to them. The Brits may consider this thievery; I call it entrepeneurship. Best regards, WAM.

Found the site when I was searching for info on Martin Moylan from Annaghdown.
Found the following but will keep on looking....

"This thought occurred to me recently when writing about the six men, five from Galway, and one from Mayo, who were shot by a Free State firing squad in the Old Workhouse in Tuam, Co. Galway on 11 April, 1923, towards the end of the civil war in Connacht.
Four of the Galwaymen were local lads, Francis Cunnane, John Newell and Michael Monaghan, all from Headford, and Martin Moylan from Annaghdown - Eanach Dhuin of the Raftery poem fame."

There is a song about him that is always been sung in my local pub.

Until last June, I never even knew that my great-grandmother
was a Moylan ! Bridget Moylan, wife of John Tobinin Clontuskert, Ballinasloe,
Galway from 1870's on.
Tobins are still there, as are some of the Moylans.

Unable to connect directly with them, but, I know they are there.

Will be in Ballinasloe for 5 days in September,2002 so I'll check it out in person !

Many Moyalns listed as god-parents of the Tobin's 9 children baptized in Clontuskert from 1871 thru 1885.

My Grandad was John Moylan of Tallaght, Dublin (I think!)
My Grandma was Molly Moylan(both died before I had time to know them)
My dad is Rory Christopher Moylan, who moved to England with most of the family at an early age.
His brothers and sisters are (or where in some cases):

Paddy, Brian, Tommy, Anne, Sheila, Carmel...

What a great web site!

My family is from Cork City.
My great-grandfather Joseph came over with his brother John in the very early 1870's
They settled in Brooklyn, NY.
No one knows what happened to my great uncle John.
There was some kind of serious falling out between the two brothers.
My great-grandfather married Margaret Dougherty (some say she was from Mayo, others say Cork)
and they had four children: Mary who was always called Mamie),
Joseph Francis (my grandfather),
Ellen (called Nellie), and Laura.

I don't know too much else.

Through some recent research conducted by my cousin Kathy Whittemore of Plymouth, New Hampshire the following information was gathered:
Daniel Moylan of Coolegeela, Cork County married Catherine Sheehan in Kanturk Parish on January 12, 1859.She apparently had been married to a Donald Moylan and they had a son born on October 4, 1857.
Catherine and Daniel had the following children:

Mary born 8-7-1864
Julia born 2-24-1867
John born 9-26-1869
Denis born 1-22-1872
Honora born 9-7-1874

Denis was my grandfather. He married Margaret Coleman
in Worcester, Massachusetts on August 6, 1895 and they had 14 childen. One of whom, George was my father.

Great greetings from a "Yank" Moylan. The Oxford Companion on Irish Heraldry notes a very early Moylan decendant who was hund in 1295 as the most notorious horse theif in all of the British Isles. Seems this Moylan would 'borrow' horses from the English and then sell them back to them. To us Irish, this is 'entrepreneurship'.

Wow! This is great. My great grandparents and my grandma were from either Cork or Tipperary. I believe it was Cork.

When my great grandfather left Ireland his best friends wife was pregnant. He told him if the child was a girl, that he would go back for her and bring her to the states.

She was, he did. Her maiden nane was Margaret Ford and we think her dad was a school teacher. They had 3 children. Mary Ellen, my grandma and Julia were born in Ireland and a son James was born here.

On the trip back, there was a horible storm and Grandma Moylan promised God that if they all made it here safe he would give up dairy products for life. They were her favorite foods. She lived to be 98 and unless someone cooked with milk or butter, she never touched thiem again. When she was in her late 80's, a doctor told her it was time for her to eat them again. She looked him in the eye and said "I didn't make that promise to you and you have nothing to say about it."

I know this is true because I was with her when she told him. She also told him to leave her house, she didn't need a doctor.

My branch of the clan came to the UK from Ireland, settling first in Walsall, near Birmingham and then in Bradford. I moved to Newcastle upon Tyne to study in 1996 and have remained here since I graduated in 1999, but my family are still in Bradford.

I have done extensive research into my line back to 1650. John Moylan was born in Ireland at that time. He had children by two wives. Miss Greatrakes, countess of Limerick died. Then he married Mary Doran.Stephen,who became a General under G. Washington during the Revolutionary war, and Francis who became a Bishop in Ireland were two of his sons. Then there was Jasper Sr. who helped found the Insurance Company of North America. He was a member of the City Troops in Philadelphia during the Revolutions. There was also John who came to America and was at one time in debtors prison. There were three daughters . Two became nuns and one took care of Bishop Francis's house. UI have much documented information on this family, and even more that is not documented. was instrumental in building a catholic church there.

I like the idea of this website. Its interesting to investigate all of the connections out there.
My family immigrated to this area (Seaforth, Ontario, Canada) sometime around the 1840's from County Galloway in Ireland.
At that time the farmland had to be cleared. Patrick Moylan was the original homesteader.
He cleared and homesteaded the land and was therefore entitled to the deed to 100 acres on Lot 10 Concession 6
of McKillop Township. This farm has been passed down through the generations, and is where my family grew up
and is where my parents, Don and Rita live. We still operate the farm although we all have outside jobs.

I live in Toronto, Canada. What a great idea this is! I am the eldest of six children, born to James Moylan from Midleton, Co. Cork and his wife, Marie O'Sullivan from Castlemartyr, Co. Cork. My father, who died on December 2nd, 1996, completed some research on our origins and I will post research that he completed when I locate it, or maybe someone else in my family has it. I am most interest in locating some family that my father was not successful in doing. He tried to locate a Vincent Moylan in the Philadelphia area who would have emigrated in the late 19th century. He would have been my father's uncle and he thought he might have become a priest in that area. Any information would be welcome. I look forward to seeing some more comments from our world wide clan. I believe also that we are a sept of the MacMillan Clan of Scotland. Can anyone confirm this ?

This is great web resource - well oranized. I wish I had information to add, but my grandfather (Joseph Moylan) was an orphan and we know nothing about his family except the came from Missouri.
